On the third Sunday of each month, young musicians gather in Northwest Portland, Oregon to play fiddle tunes together. It’s The Portland Youth Old Time Jam. It all happens in the cozy space of The Hostel Cafe, and the instruments you'll hear there include guitar, banjo, mandolin, and of course, fiddle.
True to the traditions of this community music, new players are welcomed by more experienced players who help them learn the tunes and how the session works. In appreciate of the tradition of handing these old tunes down to new players, this episode is titled “New Day.” The tunes and songs in this episode are based on The Portland Youth Old Time Jam tune list. The music is traditional music of North America, its roots, branches & beyond.
Artists in this episode include: Bruce Molsky; Cathy Jordan; Rachel Anne Goodman; Timberbound; David Grisman & Jerry Garcia; Cascadia Folk Quartet; Alex Sturbaum (with Kate Gregory); Dana & Susan Robinson; Paul Smith; George Penk, Clyde Curley & Susan Songer; Clarence Ashley & Doc Watson; Joel Mabus; Rose in the Heather; The Magpies; Tim Connell & Eric Skye; Mike Seeger (with Etta Baker); Brittany Haas; Maggie Boyle, Duck Baker and Ben Paley; Fiddlin' Earl White; Ian & Sylvia; Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein; Evie Ladin; Mike Seeger & Peggy Seeger; Mike Bryant & Paul Brown; Rafe Stefanini; Lauren Sheehan (with John Schwab); Red Yarn.
