Why parts of New Orleans still look like the hurricane just hit, ten years after Katrina
Ten years ago Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed New Orleans. Now ten years later parts of the city have not only recovered but thrive. Yet most African American communities, whether they are low income working class neighborhoods like the Lower Ninth Ward or more prosperous communities like New Orleans East and Gentilly, still bear the devastating scars of Katrina. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Gary Rivlin, author of Katrina: After the Flood, about the politics and policy decisions behind the gaping disparities between recovery efforts in Black and White New Orleans.
Gary Rivlin is an Investigative Fund reporting fellow at the Nation Institute. His latest book, Katrina: After the Flood, has just been published by Simon & Schuster. His article "Why the Lower Ninth Ward Looks Like a Hurricane Just Hit" appeared in The Nation magazine in September.
