A group of Portlanders is hoping to draw attention to racial injustice and police violence in the Portland area with a bold public project.

KBOO reporter Sam Bouman spoke last Friday with several members of Portland Equity in Action (PEA), joined by Alicia Johnson, the mother of Terrell Johnson, a 24-year-old man killed by a Portland transit police officer in May 2017. The members of PEA are lead organizer Britton Washington, Olivia Stone, Victoria Ruffin and Courtney Santoro.

They discuss the history of PEA; their origin and progress of the Billboard Project; the treatment of families after police shootings; racial injustice and white supremacy in Portland; and the efforts of families and communities to demand recognition and keep these injustices in the public mind.

A shorter version was broadcast during the KBOO Evening News on January 2, 2017.
