In the KBOO Evening Newscast that aired on 2/5/25, we misstated the financial situation of the city of Portland. The city faces an estimated $100 million dollar budget deficit, meaning the city will need to cut back on its spending and programs because it has more money budgeted to go out than it estimates will come in. We mistakenly referred to this as debt.
City Administrator Michael Jordan made commitments to City Council on Wednesday that the city would need to reduce its footprint, and make some tough choices to meet the demands of the budget deficit. We highlighted the deficit because it is influential in City Council's decision making, including in their vote to extend Jordan's contract until the beginning of 2026.
