Monica Nelson & The Highgates perform Live on Drinking From Puddles !!
Tonight 03/09/16 marks the return of the all-time leader in live appearances on this program (showing up for the 13th time in the last 19 years) it's the extraordinarily talented Monica Nelson, with her latest ensemble Monica Nelson and the Highgates !!
The Highgates are celebrating the release of their latest Limited Edition vinyl offering "Walls and Ceiling Black" that had its worldwide priemer on DFP a few months back.
The undisputed Queen of Portland Punk from 1986-1990, as vocalist and co-songwriter of the locally revered, but barely documented band, Obituaries. Monica is one of the few people who can claim that both Nirvana and Soundgarden opened for her band, but also that her band opened for both Alex Chilton and Nick Cave... as well as handful of other impressive artists, on both ends of the bill. Although not a political band, a performance during that period by the Obituaries (this time in Olympia Wa.) which always featured Monica's mesmerizing way of voicing her own personal narrative, helped inspire a young Kathleen Hanna (The Punk Singer/Bikini Kill/Julie Ruin/Le Tigre) to think that a Punk rock band might be a good way to disseminate her own, if far different, personal message to others. This was still prior to the formation of Bikini Kill.
Monica moved back to Portland and formed the Highgates back in 2012. The last time Monica was on the show, it was actually at the invitation of Portland Punk pioneers Neo Boys, who had selected her among a few others to perform live to help with their radio celebration (and also their drop party at the Crystal Ballroom) for the release of the Neo Boys' "Sooner Or Later" compendium (which took place back in 2013). Her rendition (with former Obituaries/current Highgate member John Naylor) of the Neo Boys classic "Nothing To Fear" has remained part of the Highgates set since.
Any MN related output is welcome, because in her 30th year as a performing/recording artist, stellar press quotes far out number actual releases. And those quotes just keep on coming! Here's part of what the Oregon Music News had to say just a bit earlier this year "Her songs are mindblowing. Not in the excessively aggressive Punk mode, although some are, but her lyrics and her singing are a potent combination" Don't miss her back on the program, and then next Wed. 03/16/16 Monica Nelson and the Highgates will have their EP release show at the White Eagle Saloon, 836 N. Russell, Portland
